Starting a company can grow social capital.
A group of train buffs got together and wanted to run a railroad on some abandoned tracks in Kingston, NY. They knew that in order to fulfill the requirements of real railroad tjhey had to run it like a b business.
This is a case where a grfass roots organization was formed and run like a business.
Here is an unusual example of a fusion of a private enterprise and a membership organization. The Copake Auction Houjse is known for hosting the largest auction of antique bicycles ion the world. Collectgors come from all over by plane, car, or internet to gather and bid. Notice I said “hosting” They very cleverly had a participatory component where collectors could not only see their prizes but also their friends (not competitors). The flea market was not organized by the auctioneer but hosted, facilitated it. Watch the intereactions.
Here , the particip;and are stakeholders with a vested interest in the successful outcome of the Auction House. Theuy not only patronize it, but they support it and help each other. Totally ad hod.
